Health Is a Spiritual Habit
When you’re a spiritual person, you may overlook your body. That’s because you’re so focused on the transcendent experience that you forget the rest of who you are.
But neglecting your health is a dangerous mistake. The universe put you in that life and body for a reason.
Your health matters. Here’s how to make it a spiritual habit so you can combine transcendent experience with a materially abundant one.
Move Your Body
Ancient cultures developed many exercises designed to align your body and spirit. Some of these still exist today, such as yoga and martial arts.
Most of these practices in the West have been secularized, but you can respect the religious origins of these traditions by infusing spirituality back into them. Research these exercises with their original cultural influences in mind.
However, you don’t have to follow a traditional spiritual exercise to have a transcendent physical experience. Simply walking outside and being with nature, or even listening to inspiring music as you dance along, can be a powerful way to commune with the universe.
Touch the Earth
You’ve probably heard of “grounding” before. This is where you go outside and place your bare feet on the earth.
But why is this so spiritually powerful?
It creates an electrical connection with the soil and positively affects the living matrix of cells. The benefits of this practice are improved mood, immunity, and cardiovascular health.
I’m not a fan of dirt, so I prefer to ground by placing my hands in a bowl of water. It’s not the same thing, but this kinetic-spiritual experience grounds me in a way traditional meditation can’t.
Try experimenting with different natural textures until you find one you like best.
Eat Whole Foods
When you eat whole foods, you’re being intentional with your dietary choices. You’ll need to cook your own meals or you’re at least make a direct connection between what you’re eating and where it came from.
This consciousness in the kitchen or on the table can easily be turned into a spiritual routine. If you eat meat, then you can source that meat from sustainable farms or raise your own livestock. If you’re vegan or eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, you can grow your own garden or purchase them from local markets.
When you eat seasonally, you’re following the rhythm of your natural environment. This creates a spiritual connection between you and the universe which has been severed by the mass consumption of processed foods.
Just Get Started
Don’t overcomplicate making health a spiritual habit. All you really need to do is stop, take a deep breath, and ask yourself: are you respecting your body? Respecting your body is respecting your higher self and the universe which made you.
If you answered no, it’s time to make a change. It may be difficult to get started, but you’ll feel rewarded for your efforts in the union of your mind, body, and spirit.
