Are Ghosts Real? — Tarot Reading
It’s spooky season, and I’m sure we’re all thinking about everything paranormal. Today, I wanted to ask spirit if ghosts are real. This is a channeled reading, and I’ll be using the Fountain Tarot.
Ghosts Are Real
The first card is the Four of Coins, Reversed. This means instability. When it comes to ghosts, it’s not black and white. There are rules, but those rules aren’t exact.
Then we have the Seven of Coins. This is about investment, or not everything working out. So far, I’m really getting this idea that ghosts do exist, but not everyone becomes a ghost that haunts this world. It almost seems as if when somebody dies, there are conditions that determine if they’re going to be a ghost or not. It’s not random.
There are factors that go into deciding this truth. However, not every ghost has the same origin story.

One Surprising Truth
The third card is the Two of Swords, Reversed, which is abouthaving to make a decision after being indecisive. I do think the reality of ghosts has changed over time. This card surprised, if I’m being honest.
There seems to be this idea that ghosts did exist in the past, but people weren’t too sure.
Today, that same indecision is there, but people are starting to realize that there is something else in this world. Now, as far as we know from mythology and folklore, it would seem as if ghosts were more common in the past, but maybe that’s not actually true.
There are more people alive today than there ever were in the past, so it makes sense that there are more ghosts now.
But perhaps those old stories carried more weight because they were significant. Sort of like how the biggest news stories today are the most unusual ones. We don’t hear the news about ordinary events.
Maybe those old ghost stories were the ones that evoked the strongest emotions and were passed down for that reason.
Ghosts Aren’t Common
I get the impression from the spread so far that ghosts are real, but not everyone is ever going to encounter one.
I also don’t get the impression that people are harmed by ghosts. I mentioned this in an article or reading before, but when we have an unfinished project, it creates an open loop in our mind.
Experiencing or believing we experienced a ghost causes us to have a spiritual open loop that we seek closure for… even if the ghost isn’t hurting us. We sense it’s presence and what closure and cleansing.
The End of Life Is a Portal
The next card is Death. Death is a qualifier for being a ghost. That doesn’t mean other possible ghost versions don’t exist. Some people think that ghosts are operations of energy, and that’s a possibility, but it seems like most ghosts we’ve heard about in the past are related to someone dying.
That makes sense. Death is transformation, and that’s what this card means, not just death itself. You go from one state to another. When that spiritual event happens, it can cause the soul to split from the body and not go to the next state.
Since not everyone becomes a ghost, it stands to reason that something unusual happens when a ghost is created. Otherwise, we would be a world filled with ghosts.
The Cycle of Life and Death Is Broken
The next card is the Wheel of Fortune, Reversed. It definitely seems as if what creates a ghost is a misfortunate life. You don’t become a ghost because something went right, you become one because something went wrong.
When you encounter ghosts or hear these stories, almost all seem to be negative beings. Even if they can’t harm you, you feel as if they can.
It could be that many ghosts are people who did something wrong or were wronged in such a way that the spirit transfer that should occur on death was broken. They remain around because of this.
It’s Not a Good Thing to Be a Ghost
The sixth card is the Six of Wands, Reversed. This is about a lack of glory. When we think of spirituality, we often think of ascension and glorifying the soul. Something happens with ghosts that results in them being unable to have that spiritual connection.
Maybe they lacked a spiritual relationship, and that causes them to be stuck in the material world. Their spirituality, or lack thereof, imprisons them on this earth. As ghosts, it’s not a good or pleasant experience.
They are stuck and suffering. That suffering leads to hauntings. Ghosts, it seems, are corrupted by the experience of being ghosts. It’s a pitiable state.
Magick Is a Key
The last card today is the Queen of Wands. When I first saw this card, I immediately thought of witchcraft. It’s possible that some witches become ghosts, perhaps they do something too transgressive, or because they’re so focused on the material world, they get stuck.
As an aside, nature-based religions probably don’t have people get stuck because they tend to believe in a cycle of life and death.
Mainly, though, this card represents those who can best interact with ghosts, especially through magic. The witch’s spirituality exists in our third-dimensional plane, not higher realms, so witches are more capable of connecting with ghosts than most.
If you’re interested in ghosts, you may find that practicing witchcraft, like using Ouija boards, can get you there.
A Word of Caution
This spread does suggest the possibility that you can call a ghost forward with something like tarot. I’ve never personally called forth ghosts into my tarot readings, but it’s something that could be done.
Just be aware, because we see this witchcraft card here, that if you decide to pursue ghosts or use magic to summon them, you must be careful.
The modern idea of a witch is a positive one due to the neopagan revival and Wicca branding itself as “good,” but historically, witches were transgressive and often got into rather dark magick. Not all magick users were witches, but I did pull the witch card, not the Magician card, so I think that’s significant.
Dealing with ghosts is usually a transgressive act.
There’s strong negative energy surrounding ghosts. It may be thrilling, but if you aren’t cautious, you could find yourself haunted or even have a poltergeist attached to you.
When I turned thirteen, I used a Ouija board at my friend’s birthday party (we share the same birthday, though I’m a year older). I was spiritually attacked and within an hour had to run for my life from a gang.
Then I ran into a cactus and there was enough blood that the other kids thought I got shot. I spent the next few days in a delirious haze and barely remember anything after that.
So… be wary.

I hope this reading was interesting and answered your question about whether or not ghosts are real. This will be part of a mini-series. The next reading will explore whether aliens exist.
