Who You Were in a Past Life: Tarot Pick a Card
If you were drawn to this tarot pick a card, then you feel pulled towards a past life. Most people have at least one past life, and while that past life usually remains a mystery, the karma from that experience can leave a lasting impression.
Your spirit guides believe that you’re ready to hear about one of your lives and see how that karma is relevant to you today. It’s easy: all you have to do is select one of the piles above that you’re called to most.
After you select your cards, scroll down to your pile or choose below.
Today I’m using the Rider-Waite tarot and the Moonology oracle decks (these are affiliate links that support me if you make a purchase). Remember that you have free will. That means you can manifest the positive and avoid the negative of any reading.
Now let’s find out who you were in a past life.
Pile 1: Purple Candle
You Were in Control
With your first card being the King of Wands, one of your past lives had immense power. It’s possible you were a ruler of some sort, perhaps a tribal chieftain or a member of the nobility. But I lean more towards your power coming from your own character and not from an “accident” of birth.
Many ancient groups were led by a strong leader chosen for their skills. Here I sense the fiery power of the suit of wands at work. You earned your title. And with that power, you led your people admirably and inspired them.
If you’re extroverted, you may relate to this energy quite well, but don’t assume a more introverted present life makes the King of Wands an impossible past life. While your fiery nature was present, it was tempered by the next card.
You Were Set Apart
The Hermit is a sign that this past life spent a lot of time alone. However, I don’t sense that isolation was to avoid other people, but to help them. Do you see how the old man in this card is holding a lantern? I see that as the King of Wands fire managed by the wisdom of the second card.
You had a great passion to lead your people and it caused you to part from them. Think of the traditional hero story where a youth must leave home and go on an adventure to save the world. Only your past life was more mature and wise than that.
This life was a ruler in full control and awareness of what they were capable of. The people around you trusted that you could achieve anything, so it’s likely little assistance was provided. This responsibility likely weighed heavily on you and may have caused your future lives, such as your current one, to shy away from that heavy crown.
You Need to See the Whole Picture
The last card in your spread is the Full Moon Eclipse with the wisdom message of “Conclusions are within reach.” The moon is bloodred and a little frightening.
What you need to learn from your past life is that you’re capable of great things, but the great things you choose to pursue should have a greater meaning. This doesn’t necessarily mean being a public face, but taking on the honorable persona of a leader – even when you strike out on your own.
The next time you journal or meditate, take a deep breath and allow your mind to wander on a heroic adventure. Allow this daydream to be a way for your spirit guides to communicate with you through a narrative. What happens? What do you do? Who are you?
This exercise will provide powerful insight into what traits you should accept and embody from that past life into your current one. You are a new person in this life, but the karma of that last one can inform what your soul yearns to do again.

Pile 2: Blue Candle
Your Past Self Wants to Protect You Now
I get a strong sense from your first two cards that one of your past lives was particularly sad. This may explain some of the weird, unexplained feelings you have about your current life. But unfortunately, a lot of people’s lives were hard in the past, so let’s find out what’s unique about this one.
Your first card is the Ace of Swords, Reversed. In this past life, you were powerless and unable to take control when you should have been able to. An ace card can be interpreted as the person the tarot reading is about (you) so I read the hand holding the sword upside down as disempowered.
I’m also drawn to the crown on this sword. This suit in the tarot deck is known for decision-making, so this past life likely made a poor decision that trapped them in adverse circumstances. You did not wear a crown and were a victim.
This left a scar on your soul that may be leading you to doubt your own decision-making now. This is your soul trying to protect you.
Overcoming Danger in This Life
The next card in your spread is The Tower, Reversed. A common reading of this card is avoiding absolute disaster. Due to the protective energy of your past life, I think this karmic trait you’ve inherited has saved you in the past. Perhaps in ways you don’t even know about.
But there’s another meaning here that I feel. This card also has spiritual connotations because of its connection to the Tower of Babel story in the Bible. Your connection to this past life permits a spiritual awakening and perhaps even psychic abilities. Your past self is more intimately connected to your current life than most and this empowers you.
We don’t directly communicate with our past lives in most circumstances. However, you can practice guided meditations or express yourself creatively to tap into the karmic impressions that life has left behind. Is there an image in your mind or perhaps in your creative self-expression that comes up again and again? That may be an influence from your past life.
Preparing Yourself for the Future
For your last card, I don’t have anything concrete to tell you, but that’s because of the card itself. Here we have the Full Moon in Gemini with the wisdom message of “The answers you need are coming.”
I see the twin imagery on this card as an echo of your past life serving as a shadow to your current life. I sense they aren’t yet done with their work and will step in again. When that happens, you’ll have a spiritual experience that will explain a lot about your experience of karma, good and bad, in this lifetime.
Be ready, but I have some good news: this will be an affirming and not a negative experience.

Pile 3: Orange Candle
You Are More Than One Person
The first card in your spread is the Three of Pentacles, Reversed. Your past lives may not have been team players. There’s some sort of noise in the way you and your past lives operate. Perhaps your soul doesn’t integrate into new bodies as well as others, or your past lives try to cling to your present.
You and your past lives are both the same person and also individuals at the same time. When one identity passes, the impressions left behind on your soul can get clouded and confused in new incarnations.
The point is this: your soul is conflicted in how to honor the integrity of individual lives. But I don’t believe your past lives are trying to harm you. Rather, it’s an internal, spiritual fight to persist as individuals within one body. If you ever feel like you don’t know what you want or you act in ways that seem against your personality – that’s why.
Things Are Getting Better
However, I sense the spiritual conflict within your soul has settled in your current life. That’s because your second card, the Eight of Wands, Reversed, signifies a slowdown. Something you’ve done in this life has pacified your past incarnations in some way.
Interestingly, the other piles read on a particular past life, but your spread is wider in scope. And that energy is the spiritual conflict within your soul.
But, while this is a “slow down” card, my eyes are focusing heavily on the wands seeming to fall back to the sky. There is a movement in your life, and that’s the movement of your past incarnations essentially leaving your body and returning to the aether.
For the life of me, I can’t sense what it is exactly you’ve done to improve this soul identity crisis, so it’s likely different for every person who picks this pile that spirit can’t provide an answer in my interpretation.
But I do think you need to figure out what that is, and you can do that with some self-development exercises like journaling. In particular, those fun guided journals that have prompts you respond to would be particularly helpful, like a “five questions a day” sort of journal.
This will allow you to better tap into your individual identity and strengthen your sense of present self.
Things Are Getting Better
The last card in your spread, New Moon in Capricorn with the wisdom message of “Your hard work is paying off”, suggests a true culmination of your identity. As you become more in control of your soul, you’ll begin displaying it to the world.
Capricorn as a zodiac sign is traditionally at the top of a natal chart in what’s called the Midheaven. This calls to mind the last card. Not only will you better understand yourself, but that internal conflict between your past lives will be resolved. I suspect some of your previous incarnations will become your spirit guides.
Expect to feel spiritual protection with energies that seem to know you better than anyone else. And they do: because they were once you.
