How to Make Magick
No matter who you are, you can and should do magick. But a lot of people don’t know what it is. Magick is about making the experience of life meaningful through ritual.
All spiritual paths work to develop an intuitive understanding of the world. They then practice this understanding through sacred rituals. Another word for this is magick, and any intentional spiritual activity or ability is inherently magick.
Through ritual, you create a symbolic relationship using energy between you and a higher power. This could be your soul, another person, nature, god, or even the universe.
Here’s how to make magick for yourself.
Spells
When you hear the word magick, the word “spell” instantly comes to mind, and for good reason. Spells are singular rituals intended to manifest something directly. They’re most often found in witchcraft and are normally done using the energy of the person casting the spell or through the ingredients chosen.
Some like to overly complicate spells. Although you’re welcome to rhyme, it’s not necessary nor do you need to buy expensive ingredients.
Let’s cover what a spell is and isn’t. A spell is designed to harness pure energy and direct it to manifest a reality into life. Those who use spells favor tools which ease this transfer of energy by selecting items or ceremonies which resemble the outcome in some way.
A spell is not an arcane text that’s passed down in a dusty old book. The spell, or rather the words which usually make up a spell, are not what makes the magick. It merely serves to help organize energy, and if the person doing the spell doesn’t recognize this it won’t work.
If you want to use a spell in your life, spend some time brainstorming your intended outcome. Then determine how you want to organize the energy to make it manifest.
Let’s say you want to create a wealth spell. You could say a short affirmation and then fill a bottle with coins that you bury in your garden. The coins serve to organize energy and compound it so you can draw upon it in your life.
Law of Attraction
The line between spellwork and the Law of Attraction is usually blurred. Both tend to be heavy on words, though the Law of Attraction often lacks extensive ingredients and other physical objects except for paper. For that reason, it could be called paper witchcraft.
It’s more common among general spiritual workers and those who follow traditional religions but still integrate new-age practices. The Law of Attraction also doesn’t have the same negative connotations and is less likely to be abused through curses or hexes.
The concept behind this type of magick is like spellwork too, but more clearly defined and internal. The Law of Attraction attempts to change your internal vibration by changing your mindset. This in turn will attract a more positive life to you.
Using the Law of Attraction is simple and affordable. You don’t have to spend a lot of time or money gathering ingredients as the channeling of energy is more self-reflective. Something to write with and a piece of paper is usually enough, though some people are happy just making verbal affirmations. It’s also common to create physical or digital vision boards.
But generally, all you need to do is write what you want in the present tense on a piece of paper. This is called scripting and it’s done as if you already have the outcome in your possession. It tends to look a little like this: “I’m so grateful that I love my job and I make $5,000 a month. Thank you, universe!”
Prayer
It’s a mistake not to recognize the magickal power of prayer. It’s a direct petition to your source of divinity, like a god or the universe. But your ancestors, spirit guides, and other divine natural forces can be called upon for help.
Some spiritual paths, like Christianity, make this easy – all you must do is ask and believe. Then, if it’s the will of God, you will align to that reality in your life.
Others require purification beforehand, like Shinto, where you must wash and prepare to present yourself at the temple. Though I suspect many Japanese people will pray outside of temple environments anyway, just as some Christians will endeavor to be worthy before praying.
In general, you can also pray in times of need, but there’s usually some element of formal ritual in the style of offering that’s also possible. Christians, for example, attend communal prayer services or church.
You may find it beneficial to establish some sort of routine ceremony where you make an offering to your source of divinity. This may simply be your attention in worship, like Christianity, or it may be a rich and complex ceremony like paganism.
But not everyone is a theist. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a form of prayer in your life – meditation is a good option or any act of mindfulness. Just as some spiritual people cleanse themselves before prayer, you could also use the act of personal purification as a prayer to yourself.
Divination
A final method to make magick in your life is to divine the truth from the fabric of the universe. While some would argue this isn’t traditional magick, especially when doing something like astrology which is all intuition and no ritual, the integration of divination is what truly counts.
For example, pulling a daily tarot card allows you to use your intuition to better understand yourself. And you do this by examining your relationship to the divine plan.
This isn’t for everyone. A lot of people are disturbed and fall into obsession when they use divination, especially as part of a routine spiritual practice. However, when it’s used appropriately, you can transcend the mundane reality into a richer and more layered spiritual one.
Divination, at its best, is a reciprocal relationship to the divine. Your intuition allows you to get closer to spirit, while you’re freewill pushes you to co-create with your independent mind. This creates abundance and expands the universe into even more possibilities than there had been previously. We’re co-authors to the divine plan.
If you want to use divination, you have many options, both easy and advanced. But the ones which require the most use of ritual intuition are arguably the most magickal, and I believe that tarot, channeling, and scrying are probably the best in that regard. Of those, tarot is probably the easiest.
Final Thoughts
Making magick in your life is a worthwhile experience. It helps you get closer to your source of divinity, such as a god or the universe, by using the power of energy.
You can use magick every day if you want, or you could make it a special occasion. However, I think you should use your intuition to guide you on what’s personally most appropriate.
If you use magick, it will open spiritual doors in your life and help you better understand the world around you. And isn’t that what we all want?
