Soulmates and Twin Flames Aren’t the Same Thing
There’s been a lot of controversy around the idea of twin flames lately. Some have argued that it promotes cult-like and abusive behavior, and I get it.
But the reason why this happens is due to the misunderstanding people have about the difference between soulmates and twin flames. And this is causing a lot of heartache.
So let’s dive into the similarities and differences so you won’t fall victim to the same mistake.
They’re Both Karmic Connections
One thing you need to realize about any term originating in the spiritual community is that it’s an approximation and interpretation of an observed phenomena.
Even those who are psychic or channel from other dimensions still need to interpret that data through their human framework. And then their cultural and individual perspective.
This is why religions are different all over the world.
Soulmates and twin flames are both karmic connections and these are spiritual bonds. There are other types of karmic connections out there, like a soul family, for instance, but soulmates and twin flames are the ones that tend to converge and get misinterpreted as the same thing.
The reason why this occurs is that these karmic connections can be romantic more often than others.
How to Identify Each Type
A soulmate is a karmic connection that you can grow with. You’re both using your free will to spiritually engage with each other. You can have multiple soulmates.
A twin flame is a karmic connection that mirrors you. It’s believed to be the same soul in two bodies. Actual twins are usually twin flames, so it’s not necessarily a romantic pairing. You can only ever have one twin flame.
Twin flames tend to have passionate and turbulent relationships with other. That’s because they’re attracted to each other like magnets and magnify both the good and bad in each other. It’s very triggering.
It’s easy to see why either one of these karmic connections can turn romantic. Soulmates can bond together in a romantic partnership that’s very intimate. Twin flames can be two halves of the same whole that come together as a single unit.
But soulmates are created and destroyed through free will and energetic attraction of complementary souls. A twin flame is never destroyed.
That means if your twin flame uses their free will in an unhealthy way, that relationship will turn toxic fast and there’s no way to disengage without feeling as if you lost a part of your soul in the process.
Not every twin flame relationship is toxic, but when they do get toxic, it’s hard to escape.
Integrating Both Into Your Life
Soulmates are fairly easy to integrate into your life and you’ve probably done it already. Maybe with a romantic partner, a best friend, a pet — the possible relationships are really endless.
Any soulmate relationship where you grow together to create a more devoted and healthy bond is relevant.
You don’t really get that chance with twin flames. If you meet your twin flame, they may or may not be in a position to have a meaningful and beneficial relationship with you. But your attraction to them, romantic or platonic, will be intense and more intense than a soulmate relationship. Or any other possible relationship.
Intensity does not equal happiness. And the transformation it causes may not always be a positive transformation.
This is why twin flames are so controversial. When people associate twin flames automatically as healthy soulmate relationships, those who follow that advice assume they can “fix” a broken partner. And that they have no other choice for romantic happiness but to stay and work it out.
But if your twin flame connection is making your life worse and it feels as if your moments are poison… you need to walk away. It won’t be easy. But it’s necessary.
Why? Because you or your twin flame isn’t using their free will in a healthy, positive manner. It will destroy you both.
There’s a song I love from Beth Crowley that really captures this fallout called “In the End.” Some particularly pertinent lyrics are:
Our twin flames could ignite
the whole world for each other.
But something this powerful
and dangerous
will burn until there’s nothing left.
I can tell that we’re
going to destroy one another
in the end.
Many people have this gloomy view of romance because of dramatic stories they’ve read or watched. They assume dark and twisted is more meaningful. It’s not. It destroys your very soul and can take an entire lifetime, perhaps multiple lifetimes, to heal.
One Last Thing
If your soulmate happens to be your twin flame, great news. But if not? Don’t go looking for your twin flame hoping they’ll also be a soulmate. You could be disappointed.
Upon meeting them, ask yourself if this person is a healthy connection. If not, distance yourself as soon as possible. The attraction will overwhelm your rationality if you give it a foothold.
Remember that intensity doesn’t equal happiness. Happiness equals happiness.
